been listed for their special architectural or historic interest.
When buildings are listed they are placed on statutory lists of buildings of 'special architectural or historic interest' in accordance with the Article 42 of the Planning (Northern Ireland) Order 1991. The lists of buildings of special architectural or historical interest in Northern Ireland exist to safeguard the built heritage and to promote its understanding. They are compiled and maintained by Environment and Heritage Service.
